Starting Point - Rio-Niteroi Bridge (Km 0)
After the tollbooth take the left lane and follow the signs that say Sao Goncalo/ Cabo Frio/ Nova Friburgo/ Campos/ Vitoria. Keep to your left towards Rio-Manilha (BR-101), a two-lane highway with two gas stations and a federal police station. Watch out for pedestrians and dogs who may be crossing the walkway. The maximum speed is 80 km/h. Don’t stop in any circumstances in this stretch of your trip, especially at night.
Itaborai (Km 30)
At 4 Km from Trevo de Manilha, there is a sign indicating Itaborai (to the left) and Rio Bonito/ Regiao dos Lagos (to the right). Take this last one. Another sign warns you of a dangerous curve ahead. Be careful.
Viaduto de Duques(Km 40)
After this dangerous curve, there is a 11 Km. long stretch with 2 lanes separated by a barrier wall. There are 2 gas stations along the way until you arrive at the Viaduto de Duques (overpass). Decrease your speed because there is a radar trap that automatically fines you if you exceed 50 Kim/h. (The fine may be hefty). At the end of the overpass there is a sharp curve to the right, so be careful. After the overpass there is a long straight stretch of road where on your right you will see telephone antennas. Continue straight, going under an overpass that gives access to Tangua city. Watch out for the federal police station ahead where you must slow down!
Rio Bonito/Via Lagos (Km 63)
About 5 minutes after crossing the overpass at Tangua, you will see a sign indicating Regiao dos Lagos. Just after the sign there is an intersection that leads to Rio Bonito city. Turn right at the intersection and you´ll be on RJ-124 (heading towards Rio Bonito-Araruama). There are radars on this road and the maximum speed permitted is 100 km/h.
BOA ESPERANÇA (Km 76)
This is the first village you will pass by, located at the end of a long stretch. Watch out for pedestrians and bicycles crossing the road. Boa Esperanca is a nice place to take a break as there are many restaurants by the road.
Pedagio Via Lagos (Km 85)
This toll is located 9 Km after Boa Esperanca. Prepare yourself to be ripped off as the fee is quite pricey.
The end of Via Lagos (Km 120)
In 5 more minutes you´ll reach another intersection. Turn left towards Buzios, Rio das Ostras, Macae. Follow the signs and turn right on RJ-106, in the direction of Buzios. You´ll pass the region where there were lots of slave farms from which much of the population of Armacao de Buzios originated.
Turn off towards Buzios(Km 135)
In 15 Km you will see a gas station called “ Ate que enfim”, and the access to Buzios is on the right. Follow the sign to PRAIA RASA/ BUZIOS. In another 5 minutes you will come to a view which will make your long journey worthwhile . You´re passing the most unspoiled beach of Buzios, called Rasa beach.
PORTICO DE BÚZIOS (Km 150)
As you approach the town be careful of the speed bumps. Keep an eye on the left side and you’ll see the ocean. Along the road you can see the typical dry vegetation and architecture of the houses and hotels along the way. After 150 Km and 1 hour and 45 minutes since the toll of the Rio-Niteroi bridge, you´ll cross through the gateway of the city of ARMACAO DOS BUZIOS, or just BUZIOS. Relax: you’ve just arrived at the place where there´s no room for sadness and happiness is guaranteed.
